Coalition urges swift passage of Senate trauma care bill

A coalition of 18 health care organizations, including AHA, yesterday urged swift passage
of legislation extending a federal program that authorizes grants to states to plan,
implement and develop statewide trauma care systems, noting that the Institute of
Medicine last week called for a coordinated and regionalized system of emergency and
trauma care modeled after the program. “Hospital emergency departments and trauma centers
are severely overcrowded and often physician specialists are unavailable to provide
emergency and trauma care,” the organizations said in a letter to Senate Majority Leader
Bill Frist, who sponsored the Trauma Care Systems Planning and Development Act. “
S. 265
addresses these problems and is the first crucial step in ensuring that Americans receive
the emergency care they expect and deserve.”
