>From TV and radio ads to piles of direct mail appeals, Californians face a dizzying array
of drug plan choices under Medicare Part D - 50 to 71 depending on where they live. What
does all this choice mean for the state's 4.3 million Medicare beneficiaries?

In the first detailed analysis of California's plans, The Medicare Drug Benefit: How Good
Are the Options? examines the state's Medicare drug plan offerings and explores the
differences among them.

The study reveals the differences are significant. In addition to the sheer number of
plans, the wide range of benefit designs makes comparison difficult.

It also finds that most Medicare plans offer coverage inferior to Medi-Cal, with
potentially adverse health consequences for the so-called "dual-eligibles"-low-income
beneficiaries who qualify for Medicare and Medicaid.
