Hurricane Relief
Source: AAEM (http://www.aaem.org)
Date: October 3, 2005
Dear AAEM Members:
On behalf of the AAEM and AAEM Texas State Chapter boards of directors, we are once again
writing to you to both express our sorrow for those of you affected by the destruction in
the gulf coast states as well as to let those of you not directly affected know how you
can help.
We were proud and pleased to see how emergency physicians came to the aid of their
colleagues after Hurricane Katrina and Rita. If you were displaced by either Katrina or
Rita, AAEM members have offered both their homes and, in some instances, job
opportunities for fellow emergency physicians. If you still need help in this area,
please contact the AAEM office at info at aaem.org.
In addition, many members have asked how they are able to volunteer their services in
these states. Once again, the best way to do so is to contact you local DMAT teams. A
listing of contact information for these teams can be found at http:\teams.fema.gov/dmat.
In addition, if you are interested in serving in Louisiana, contact the Louisiana State
Medical Society at www.lsms.org. If you are interested in serving in Mississippi,
contact the Mississippi Osteopathic Medical Association at www.moma-net.org.
Also, in addition to the national funds that many of you have contributed to, you may be
interested in knowing that you can contribute to the following:
Greater New Orleans Medical Foundation (tax deductible)
c/o Hibernia Bank Main Office - Baton Rouge
440 3rd Street
Baton Rouge, LA 70802
Please include the tax ID# of 20-1650323
bank account# of 2080558964
This foundation is committed to helping physicians whose practices were damaged or
destroyed by Katrina to re-establish their medical practices so that they can continue to
care for the citizens of New Orleans.
You may also want to donate to the LSU Residency Fund. Contributions may be sent to:
LSU Emergency Medicine Alumni Association
ATTN: Residency Disaster Relief Fund
c/o Marie Wegeman
Baton Rouge Emergency Medicine Residency Program
Earl K. Long Medical Center
5825 Airline Highway
Baton Rouge, LA 70805
Thank you to all of you who have helped in your own ways with the destructions caused by
Katrina and Rita - whether you worked in the medical facilities immediately following the
tragedies, you have volunteered in the aftermath of the hurricanes or you provided
financial support.
Thank you again.
