Study examines EDs serving a high volume of safety net patients

Friday, May 21, 2004

In 36% of the nation's emergency departments, at least 30% of the patients are uninsured
or eligible for Medicaid, according to a new report on the characteristics of "high
safety-net" EDs. The report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National
Center for Health Statistics finds such EDs are more likely to be in areas with higher
rates of poverty and unemployment and fewer primary care physicians than other
communities, and their patients are more likely to be treated for non-urgent conditions.
The report can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/04facts/safetynet.htm
