House Passes Stroke Act

June 18, 2004

The House of Representatives June 14 approved the "Stroke Treatment and Ongoing
Prevention Act" (H.R. 3658), sending the bill to the Senate for consideration by the
Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. H.R. 3658 was introduced by Reps.
Chip Pickering (R-Miss.) and Lois Capps (D-Calif.), and was approved by the House Energy
and Commerce Committee in March [see Washington Highlights, March 5]. The Senate
companion bill (S. 1909), cosponsored by Sens. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Edward Kennedy
(D-Mass.), has 23 cosponsors but has not seen action. The legislation creates public
awareness programs on stroke prevention, provides funding to implement stroke care
systems, establishes a data clearinghouse and authorizes health care professionals
education programs in stroke and traumatic injury treatment. It also provides grants to
the states to develop telehealth networks.
