HMO profits jump 52% in first nine months of 2003, Weiss reports

Monday, May 3, 2004

The nation's HMOs continue to post robust profits, earning $6.7 billion in the first nine
months of 2003, a 52% increase over the $4.4 billion reported a year ago, Weiss Ratings
Inc. reported today. The strength of HMOs has improved substantially since 1999, when the
industry recorded a $524 million profit for the same nine-month period, said rating
agency Weiss. Caroline Steinberg, AHA vice president for health trends analysis,
commented, "This report indicates that a good chunk of the increase in health insurance
premiums is going into the coffers of health insurance plans, and not going to cover the
rising costs of providing care."
