We would like all members of CAL/AAEM and AAEM in California to either call or fax Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez's office in Sacramento asking him to pass the emergency legislation authored by Senate Pro-Tempore Don Perata on December 6th.
Speaker Nunez's office has been telling us that they do not want to
introduce the emergency legislation on December 6th. They feel that " the
world will not end if we wait until January to look at this bill." This bill
is needed to direct $24.8 million to the Maddy EMS funds.

For the fifth year in a row, the State budget included a $24.8 million
allocation of Prop 99 Tobacco Revenue to emergency medical services. The
language that directs the monies was inadvertently excluded from the budget
trailer bill. Senator Perata's bill is needed to ensure the monies be placed
into the same accounts as in the previous four years. The bill language in
the emergency legislation will be identical to years past. This is solely a
technical correction to language that was left out of the budget trailer
bill.

We understand that Speaker Nunez feels this bill can wait until January. As
emergency physicians we see the emergency care system falling apart all
around us. Hospitals and emergency rooms are continuing to close at a rapid
pace. These monies are needed more today than ever. We are asking Speaker
Nunez to recognize the need for these funds now.

Below are the contact numbers for Speak Nunez's office in Sacramento.
