Flu season comparable to others recently with same dominant strain

April 9, 2004

While the 2003-04 flu season was earlier and more severe than the previous
three seasons, it was comparable to several seasons in the 1990's when
similar influenza strains circulated, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention reported today. Flu activity appeared in October and peaked
during late November to December, with 45 states reporting widespread flu
activity during the week ending Dec. 20, according to the Morbidity and
Mortality Weekly Report. Flu activity declined rapidly during January to
February, with the last regional activity reported the week ending Feb. 21.
While CDC received reports on 142 flu-associated deaths in children this
season, almost all before the end of January, there's no previous national
data for comparing whether that's more or less than usual because that data
has not been collected nationally before. The report can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/ .
