2) CDC: Falls most common reason for ED visits by elderly

Falls are the most common reason for injury-related emergency department visits among Americans age 65 and older, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported today. Roughly 2.7 million older adults were treated for nonfatal injuries in hospital EDs in 2001, 62% of them for falls, the agency said. The CDC analysis looked at nonfatal injuries among older adults by type, cause and gender to help in targeting prevention messages to different elderly populations. It found falls were more than twice as common among elderly women than men, and occurred most often in the home. For more, go to http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr.
