Physician reimbursement--

"Pay for academic doctors rises, flattens for administrators"

Many physicians in academic practices saw compensation increases last year as the academic sector tried to stay competitive with private practices. Some specialties saw their salaries decline, however, and pay for academic practice administrators either remained the same or dropped slightly.

According to data released last week by the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), primary care physicians in academic practices saw their compensation go up by almost 4%. Subspecialists gained slightly more than 2% on average in 2002.

Some subspecialists, however, enjoyed substantial gains, including gastroenterologists in academic practices, whose compensation jumped by 13%. Ob-gyns in academic practices, on the other hand, watched their compensation drop by 3%.

An MGMA press release on the survey said that market forces were behind many of the compensation changes among specialties. To compete with private or community group practices, academic practices offered more money to subspecialties like gastroenterology.

The decline in pay for ob-gyns, the press released said, reflects the fact that many academic practices lose ob-gyn patients to community practices that have more convenient locations.

Administrators in academic practices saw their compensation either remain unchanged or decrease slightly from the previous year. Analysts said that as academic practices have struggled to stay competitive, many have shifted funds from pay for management to clinical staff.

The MGMA press release is online at http://www.mgma.com/press/academiccomp.cfm.
