2) Report: Seniors to constitute 51% of hospital admissions

A report published today by Solucient says that in 25 years, U.S. hospitals could annually admit nearly 9.8 million more seniors than current levels, a 78% increase. Seniors constituted roughly 40% of U.S. hospital inpatient admissions and 49% of hospital beds in 2002, but are expected to account for the majority of total U.S. hospitalizations by 2027, with 51% of admissions and 59% of all beds, Solucient says. The report attributes the growth to demographic factors such as the aging of the baby boom generation, increasing life expectancy and immigration. While states with already large senior populations, such as Florida and Oklahoma, are expected to see a modest increase in inpatient admissions by 2027, the findings indicate states with large baby boom populations and continued immigration will experience the largest boost in senior hospitalization over the next quarter century.
