Hey people, a student needs help with a case study about the Black
experience of racism on campus. It's involved with the REACH program
at the CCC. Check the info below:

Hello Black Student Union members,

Hello my name is Julio Castillo and I am currently a student here at UCI.
I am involved with the Reaffirming Ethnic Awareness & Community Harmony
(REACH) program here in the CCC. The REACH program requires us to do a
case study for our class. I wanted to ask if I may please receive your
help on a case study for my class.

The purpose of my study is to understand and describe the experience and
culture of African American/Black students involved the Black Student
Union.

The reason I chose this group is because as a Latino male in the
university and I am very aware of the fact that both Latinos & African
American/Black males have been disproportionally misrepresented in the
university system and higher education. I plan on becoming a culturally
competent counseling psychologist and involved in education policy as
well. For me it is extremely important to understand not only the Latino
experience but also my fellow brother’s experience as well so that I can
effectively and correctly be an advocate for change for our communities.

I wanted to ask if BSU would be kind enough to help me find 5 individuals
that would be willing to meet with me for less than an hour. I would
really appreciate it if BSU could send an email to all male members and by
word of mouth. I will ask the following questions:

Study Questions
Do you feel that the university faculty, its students, and your friends
understand and appreciate your culture?

How do you attempt to incorporate your culture on a daily basis while
studying here at UCI? (e.g. the clothes you wear, the food you eat, the
music you listen to, the people you interact with, the classes you take,
the clubs your involved with, and the conversations you have)

Have you ever been discouraged to continue to be enrolled school because
you have faced any challenges, if so please explain what challenges you
have faced?

Have you experienced racism on campus, can you describe these experiences,
if so how have those experiences affected you?

If you have experienced any challenges here at UCI (i.e. being treated
differently on the basis of any of your social identities) what have you
learned from them, how do plan to help others who experience the same
things you have as well, and what can you do to help the UCI community
understand that your experiences are harmful and need to be addressed?

I guarantee that all the information shared between myself and the 5
participants will be confidential and I can guarantee anonymity if the
participants would like. Only Mr. Kevin Huie-part of the Cross-Cultural
Center and director of the REACH program- and myself will read this essay.

I also hope to start interviewing the participants this Friday, weekend,
or next week-if possible. I will attempt to tailor to the participant’s
availability as best as possible.

If there are any questions please let me know. I look forward to
collaborating with these individuals.

Sincerely,

Julio Castillo
