  *   Wednesday, April 26th 2017 4 - 6pm Humanities Gateway 1030: Eta Sigma Phi (Classics Honor Society) invites you to its annual undergraduate colloquium.
Eisner Award-winning cartoonist Eric Shanower discusses his Trojan War graphic novels, A Thousand Ships, Sacrifice, and Betrayal, and how he gathers sources, both literary and archaeological, to create the project. Mr. Shanower won the 2001 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best Writer/Artist and is also the author of several graphic novels concerning the story of Oz. Festive reception will follow the presentation. Event sponsored by Eta Sigma Phi (the Classics Honor Society), the Department of Classics, and Illuminations.

  *   Also on Thursday, April 27, 2017 - 6:00 PM Laguna Art Museum “Shakespeare and the Visual Arts”: UCI professor Julia Lupton joins Laguna Art Museum director Malcolm Warner for a public discussion, with illustrations and dramatic readings by Bri McWhorter.

What kinds of images inspired Shakespeare in composing and staging his plays? And how have artists responded to the vivid tableau depicted in Shakespeare’s plays? Wall hangings, wood cuts, paintings, and posters are among the visual riches that illuminate the dramas of Shakespeare. This illustrated conversation will include dramatic readings from King Lear, Hamlet, and Twelfth Night by Bri McWhorter, who has performed with UCI’s New Swan Shakespeare Festival.   *   Tuesday, May 2, 6:00 - 7:30 pm, Irvine Barclay Theater: Reza Aslan presents “Fear Inc., Confronting Islamophobia in America” Aslan will focus on “Fear Inc., Confronting Islamophobia in America," speaking as part of a lecture series about Perspectives on Bias, Prejudice, & Bigotry. The series aims to examine the complex nature of prejudice while identifying productive strategies to counter bias and hate in our time. An internationally renowned scholar of religions, Aslan currently hosts the popular CNN Believer series and serves as professor of creative writing at the University of California, Riverside. He brings his critical and engaging analyses about the intersections of religion, politics, and culture to UCI to discuss the possibilities and power of community. The 2017-2018 Board of AHUA will be made up of a President, an Administrative Vice President, Activities Vice President, Treasurer, Historian, and Webmaster. All positions are available.
