Curatorial Internship for Credit
Huntington Museum and Library, Pasadena
Spring 2015

The Department of Art History offers a unique and exciting opportunity for a UCI art history major to complete a three-month internship at the Huntington Museum and Library for course credit during SPRING QUARTER 2015. This is an unequaled opportunity to gain behind the scenes access and experience in curatorial work for art history majors considering a career in museum work.

The intern will assist James Glisson, Bradford and Christine Mishler Assistant Curator of American Art, with a variety of curatorial projects. Potential projects and activities include installing the exhibition A World of Strangers: Crowds in American Art (opens June 2015), conducting archival research using online sources on the history of sculpture in the US Capitol, writing a blog post/s for the Huntington’s website, assisting with acquisition research and other queries as needed. (S)he will be introduced to the various working parts of the Art Collections from registration to conservation.  The actual work will vary based on departmental needs as well as the interests and skills of the intern. This internship will require working at the Huntington one day a week for ten weeks.

The intern will simultaneously be enrolled in a 199 Independent Study (4 units) with an art history faculty mentor while interning at the Huntington. (S)he will be required to meet weekly with his/her mentor and complete a short paper based on research conducted during the internship.  The total time commitment for this internship will run 10-12 hours a week including visits to the museum, offsite research and work with faculty mentor.

1.      A one- page letter of interest explaining interest and qualifications for internship

2.      Combined GPA of 3.0 or higher in art history courses at UCI

3.      Resumé (of no more than 2 pages) that includes previous internships, work experience and art history courses completed at UCI

4.      Name of one member of the art history faculty who will provide reference (student must contact reference in advance and ask if he/she is willing to act as reference).

Paid Museum Internship
San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego
Summer 2015

The Department of Art History and Friends of Art History (FOAH) are pleased to announce a SUMMER 2015 PAID INTERNSHIP of 120 hours/4 weeks/$2000 in the San Diego Museum of Art's Department of Asian Art. The intern will work directly with Dr. Marika Sardar, Associate Curator of Asian Art, and the Museum's South Asian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and/or Islamic collections. (S)he will be assigned specific works of art to research, producing a bibliography, catalogue entry and label text by the end of the Internship. The intern will attend select meetings with Curator, tour museum vaults, visit conservation labs and observe the gallery installation process. The Internship is open to UCI Art History Majors in good standing (3.0 overall GPA), possessing an interest in Asian art, strong research and writing skills, and the desire to experience museum curatorship and administration.
