Dear Art History minors,
As you work on finalizing your Spring schedule, I'm writing to encourage
you to consider taking a 198 seminar if you have upper-division standing.
There are two 198 seminars being offered this Spring:
*Islamic Empires, with Pro**fessor Alka Patel, Tuesdays 2-4:50*
/Islamic Empires: The Ottomans, Safavids and Mughals and the Shaping of
the Modern World/
This course takes an in-depth and comparative look at the most powerful
states of the emerging modern world: the Ottomans of Anatolia
(1453-1923), the Safavids of Iran (1501-1736), and the Mughals of South
Asia (c. 1525-1858). Between them, these states commanded western Asia
and Asia Minor and were the principal counterparts to the nascent
European colonial powers of Britain, France and Holland. During a time
when all of these states were on an equal footing, there was an
extensive flow of good and ideas between these world regions. We will
explore how the interactions of the Islamic powers among themselves, as
well as their dialogue with the European states, were both foundational
to the shaping of the modern world as we know it. Weekly readings, one
paper and one presentation. No prerequisite.
*LA Cool Architecture, with Professor Lyle Massey, Tuesdays **12:30-3:20*
This course will cover architecture in Los Angeles from CA. 1900 to the
present. Moving from Art Nouveau to Art Deco, Frank Lloyd Wright to
Charles and Ray Eames, from mid-century modernism to Frank Gehry, this
course will explore the extraordinary built environment of the big
Orange. Field trips during the quarter will take us to see Hollyhock
House, Gamble House, the Bradbury Building, Bullock's Wilshire, the
Witch's House in Beverly Hills, Chemosphere, Disney Concert Hall, and
many more. Throughout the quarter we will also watch films that feature
LA architecture and use it to represent concepts of the urban jungle,
the graveyard of dreams and car culture.
These courses are restricted to Art His majors, but if you let me or
Cecilia know that you would like to enroll, we can authorize you into
the course. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
me or Cecilia, or the instructor of the course!
All best,
Caroline
