Volunteer art installation opportunity May 7 w/ artist Negar Farajiani's Made in China artwork from 9AM-5PM. This all-day event, presented by the Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture; co-sponsored by Illuminations.

Born in Yazd, Iran, in 1977, Negar Farajiani is a Tehran-based painter, media artist, and free-lance curator who has exhibited her socially engaged artwork internationally. Farajiani's twelve-by-twelve foot beach ball titled Made in China began its world tour in 2010, greeting audiences in unexpected locations in downtowns, deserted factories, and economically depressed neighborhoods to distract people from their harsh everyday realities. Made in China has traveled through locations ranging from Iranian cities such as historic Yazd and the bustling modern capital of Tehran, to ethnically diverse North American cities like Toronto. Farajiani's beach ball travels without instructions for audiences, though the artist hopes people will consider their roles in globalization as they play with an object conceptualized in Iran and made in China.

Volunteers will monitor Made in China's movement on campus, staying within close proximity to the ball and making sure that it stays within parameters set by UCI Facilities Management to ensure safety standards. Additionally, volunteers will promote Farajiani's afternoon talk by dis-tributing flyers that include information about the artwork and the 3-5PM speaking event. Volunteers will prepare for the May 7th installation through a meeting with Farajiani on Wednesday, May 6, in which they will hear more about the artist's vision for Made in China.
