Please see the attached flyers about upcoming events related to the
National Endowment of the Arts at Cal State University, Long Beach
during the week of September 26. Two of these events are free of
charge, including:

The Law and the NEA 4 Thu, Sep 27 at 1pm, Carpenter Center

Panel discussion, free and open to the public, on government censorship
of the arts with Professor Karl Manheim of Loyola Law School; Dr. Craig
Smith, Director of CSULB’s Center for First Amendment Studies; and Carol
Sobel, the attorney who represented the NEA 4 at the district court level.

Featuring special guests Karen Finley, Holly Hughes and Tim Miller.

In February 1990, the National Endowment for the Arts solo performance
peer panel unanimously recommended grants for 18 performance artists
including Karen Finley, John Fleck, Holly Hughes, and Tim Miller, based
on the artistic merit of their work.

In June 1990, Congress passed a “decency clause” requiring the NEA to
consider not just artistic merit, but “general standards of decency and
respect for the diverse beliefs of the American public.” The NEA
announced the defunding of the artists, who become known as the NEA 4. A
firestorm of debate ensued, going to the US Supreme Court.

Hear both sides of the case discussed by noted experts, and learn about
government censorship of the arts today.

Banned, Blacklisted and Boycotted: Censorship and the Response To It
(The B-Word Project) is a CSULB campus-wide initiative coordinated by
the Carpenter Performing Arts Center to focus attention on censorship
through innovative collaborations with departments, organizations, and
off-campus entities. The B-WORD Project is made possible by a Creative
Campus Innovations Grant from the Association of Performing Arts
Presenters funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
