Dear Art History majors,

I know how busy you are studying for finals and writing up papers, but I wanted to send you a quick note encouraging you to add Prof. Kennedy-Quigley's Art His 198 seminar, Propaganda in Antiquity, to your winter schedule. The seminar will meet Mondays from 3-5:50pm. If you've taken a class with Prof. K-Q before, you know what a phenomenal teacher she is, and this promises to be a fascinating class about the intersection of divine imagery and propaganda. The course description follows below.

Good luck on finals, and all best wishes for very happy holidays and a joyful new year!
Caroline

Art His 198: Propaganda in Antiquity
This seminar will investigate the use of divine imagery by kings, demagogues, emperors, and even empresses as an expression of legitimacy, divine sanction, and power in Classical Antiquity. Our study will begin with an examination of the claim of divine identity by the Hellenistic monarchs – most notably Alexander the Great – before considering how the compelling visual programs formulated by these Greek kings influenced the progression of propaganda in late Republican and Imperial Rome. Prior exposure to the Classical tradition is helpful, but not required or presumed. Course requirements include participation in class discussions relative to required readings and a research paper.
