Hello All,
I just received a message that unless enrollment reaches the teens in
the British Art course that I'm slated to teach during Summer Session I,
the course will likely be canceled. I'm very excited about this
opportunity to teach in my specialty area and think it should be a great
course (rarely offered at UCI), so if you know of any students who might
be interested, please encourage them to enroll.
I've included a description below. The course runs from June 21 to July
26--Tuesday/Thursdays 1pm-3:50pm.
Thanks!
Susan

*British Art of the 19h and 20th Century (4)*
This upper division course follows various movements in British Art from
the rise of landscape painting in the early 19th century to the
development of British modernism in the early 20th century. Our study
would center on three primary themes for British art of the period:
dialectical tensions between art's function as a commodity and its
theoretical elevation from the market, (2) art's relations to national
identity, and (3) art's potential for social reform. Art would be
approached as a cultural, social, and political practice, with
implications for personal, group, and national identity.
Class sessions related to nineteenth-century art would focus on the
landscape painting of John Constable, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood,
William Morris and the arts and crafts movement, and Aestheticism and
Symbolism of the turn of the century. The latter part of the course
would be devoted to British modern art of the twentieth century,
considering the unique forms and interests of British modernism in the
broader context of European modern art. A combination of primary and
secondary source readings focusing on key themes and issues would be
required, along with written responses to the readings, midterm, and
final exam.
