Hello to all Art History Majors:

I hope you are having a great summer. The purpose of this email is to
alert you to check out an email you should have received earlier today
from Humanities Counseling concerning Sami Siegelbaum's Summer Session
II class, _*"Art and the City*_". It sounds like it's going to be an
interesting and engaging class and there are still seats available.

You might want to take this class if you have some time and are looking
for something good to do with the rest of your summer, and/or if you
want to add some credits to your transcript. If you are interested,
please register for this class as soon as possible to ensure your spot.

Looking forward to seeing you all in the fall and, hopefully, some of
you at Summer Session II for Sami's class! Stop by and say hi if you're
around Monday or Tuesday 8-4:30 or Wednesday 8-12 when I'm in the office.

Cecilia

Here is the class description in case you missed it previously for any
reason and are interested:

_Art History 140A: "Art and the City," (T,Th, 1-3:50pm), Summer Session II_

"It has recently been calculated that, for the first time in history,
more of the earth's population now live in cities than in rural areas.
However, the urbanization of global society is a process that has been
taking place since the 19th century and has developed unevenly around
the world.

- How have artists responded to these enormous changes?
- In what ways has art challenged or aided urban development?
- What new forms of social life and culture arise from the modern city?
- How have different social groups used art or visual culture to claim
their "right to the city"?
- How can art affect everyday life in the city?

These are some of the questions we will address through a thematic
investigation of the complex relationship between art and urban space
from the late 19th century to the present.

This course will count towards the art history major or minor as an
upper-division credit.
