ABSTRACT: The iPad has been integrated into the medical school curriculum at UCI through the iMedEd initiative. Accordingly, the iPad has been integrated into the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) exam for two third-year clerkships: pediatrics and family medicine. This study seeks to evaluate the affordances of the iPad for the student doctor standardized patient encounters during the family medicine OSCE exam. Specifically, we would like to analyze the use of a patient education iPad app, drawMD, and the effect on student doctor standardized patient communication using the iPad and this tool on their encounters.

SPEAKER BIO: Youm's recent work has focused on implementing effective uses of the iPad in a clinical setting through the iMedEd Initiative (http://www.imeded.uci.edu/) and working with faculty and students to explore and integrate technology into the medical school curriculum. Her other research interests include mobile technologies, digital/blended learning and systems thinking. Youm received her Ph.D. in Cognitive Studies in Education from Columbia University and also holds Masters degrees in Instructional Technology and Computer Science.

The SURF-IT student working with Youm and Prof. Yunan Chen is John Delshadi, a major in Informatics.
