The impact of alcohol use has been widely studied and is considered a public health issue. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) recommends Screening and Brief Intervention and Referral Treatment (SBIRT), but the actual practice in the Emergency Department (ED) is constrained due to limited provider time and financial resource. The objective of this project is to assess the effectiveness of alcohol screening in the ED through technology. Computerized Alcohol Screening and brief Intervention (CASI) compared to alcohol screening by nursing during Medical Screening Examination (MSE) in the ED and it's societal role will be discussed. CASI has been successfully implemented at UC Irvine Trauma Center and several other trauma centers. Published studies from the work at UC Irvine including a review of the literature will be discussed.

Dr. Lotfipour is one of the faculty mentors for the SURF-IT Fellows
