Abstract

The enterprise software market is seeing the rise of a new business
model---selling Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), in which a standard piece
of software is owned and managed remotely by the vendor and accessed by
users as a service over the Internet. SaaS leverages shared IT
infrastructure and promises to lower customers' costs of implementing
and using software. Such efficiency gains may enhance the market demand
for enterprise software, although software vendors face the challenges
of transitioning from the traditional perpetual licensing model to the
new lease-based revenue model. In this talk, I discuss the challenges
and opportunities that this new business model presents to software
vendors and customers.
