Title: Refactoring the Internet for the 21st Century
Speaker: Ken Calvert, University of Kentucky
Time: 11 a.m.-noon
Date: Friday, Feb. 1, 2013
Location: Donald Bren Hall, Room 6011
Abstract: Computing systems increasingly rely on the Internet
as a
vital component. The network -- whose basic abstractions and
protocols were developed decades ago in a very different environment
-- is now a critical part of society's infrastructure. It is not
difficult to imagine individual features that would be nice to have in
the Internet. However, the question of how to organize network
functionality to meet the needs of future applications, without
introducing unmanageable complexity, is more difficult. This
talk will describe and compare some past and current efforts to design
an Internet architecture for the next 40 years, with a focus on two
projects, Postmodern Internet Architecture and ChoiceNet.
Bio: Ken Calvert is professor and chairman of the
Department of Computer
Science at the University of Kentucky, and acting director of the
Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments. His research deals
with the design and implementation of advanced network protocols and
services. Current projects include the ChoiceNet future internet
architecture and ways to improve home networking. He developed one of
the first widely-used tools for modeling the topology of the Internet.
Calvert, who is a member of the ACM and a Fellow of the IEEE, is the
coauthor of several introductory books on network programming.
