Abstract: Throughout
history, human societies have struggled to ensure that all people have
access to sufficient food to lead active and healthy lives. Despite
great global effort, events of the early 21st century clearly
demonstrate that food remains a pressing challenge that has significant
implications for security. Rising food prices have motivated unrest in
many parts of the world and increased the number of people who do not
receive proper nutrition. National and international food safety
incidents have raised awareness of the ability of the food supply to
transfer health threats to people and animals. Agricultural and food
production activities are key drivers of environmental and climate
change while also likely to face significant impacts from these changes
in coming decades. This talk will provide an introduction to the major
issues impacting global food security, as well as linking food security
to other pressing security challenges facing people and societies,
including sustainability and global environmental change. This talk will
also discuss results from a recent survey of the UCI community about
food and sustainability, and provide an overview of efforts underway to
promote sustainable food at the university.
