Calit2 announces the next seminar in the SURF-IT Seminar Series

"Videogame Research and Graduate Education"

Mark Warschauer

Professor, Education

      Graduate Student:    Paul Rama

SURF-IT Fellows:   Alex Taubman, Jason Tran

This talk will discuss a research project on videogames and learning in
the context of graduate education.  We will discuss the relationship of
undergraduate research to graduate education, including suggestions for
successfully applying to doctoral programs.  Paul Rama will discuss the
videogames and learning research project and how it fits into his
trajectory as a Ph.D. student in Education.

Dr. Warschauer earned his PhD in Second Language Acquisition at the
University of Hawaii.  Before coming to UCI in 2001 he also had broad
work experience including the University of Hawaii, the Agency for
International Development, and as a high school teacher in San
Francisco.

"Audio Transmission over Software Defined Radio"

Professor, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science

         Graduate Student:    Ala Khalife

SURF-IT Fellow:     Jason Tran

 

Software Defined Radio is a new emerging technology that enables
researchers to develop and test  new protocols and algorithms over the
wireless media.  In this talk, we will give a brief description about
this technology and focus on audio transmission as our main application.
We will also show the audience a live demo of what we have so far.

Dr. Jafarkhani has been at UCI since 2001; he previously worked for AT&T
Labs and Broadcom.  He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering at the
University of Maryland.

"SURF-IT" is the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in IT.
