University Club

The Entrepreneurs Forum at UC Irvine provides an intimate and
informative setting for faculty and researchers who are interested in
the entrepreneurial process. Each lunch features a faculty member from
UC Irvine or within the UC System who shares his/her experiences and
advice on the technology transfer process and starting companies.
Faculty will have the opportunity to actively participate in a spirited
Q&A session with each speaker.

This event is open to UCI faculty and senior researchers, and OCTANe
members and sponsors.

PLEASE NOTE: Lunch will no longer be provided. If you choose to have
lunch while listening to the program, there is a $15 charge at the door.
Lunch service at the University Club opens at 11:15 a.m.

James Earthman has worked as a professor of chemical engineering and
materials science and biomedical engineering, and is now the associate
vice chancellor for research. Earthman undertakes a variety of projects
for the Office of Research, with a special emphasis in the areas of
research development and organized research. He chairs the Research
Advisory Committee and is working with faculty interested in forming new
centers and institutes. Earthman was also the co-founder of Perimetrics,
LLC, a biomedical/dental device startup company.

Earthman's research activities include studying deformation and damage
mechanisms in model and advanced materials. His work also involves the
development and use of computer-based techniques for determining the
damping characteristics of biomaterials and mechanical biocompatibility,
the corrosion behavior of metals exposed to living cells, and the
nondestructive characterization of surface defects in situ.

He has authored and co-authored more than 100 research publications,
including two chapters on biomechanics and materials for tissue
engineering. He is an inventor on five patents, two international
patents and three pending patents. He has also served as editor for two
books in the fields of materials science and biomedical engineering.

Earthman is active with the Advanced Power and Energy Program at the
National Fuel Cell Research Center, has been involved with the Academic
Senate at UC Irvine, and has served as a campus representative to the
university-wide Planning and Budget Committee and Senate Assembly.

He received a bachelor's degree in materials science and engineering
from Rice University in 1980, and master's and Ph.D. degrees in
materials science and engineering from Stanford University in 1982 and
1985, respectively.
