Abstract: The market for digital still and
cell-phone cameras has experienced considerable growth in recent years.
The image capture and processing features of still and cell-phone
cameras are expected to grow further in the near future. Since its
inception, the Signal and Image Processing (SIP) Lab at the University
of Texas at Dallas has been collaborating with Texas Instruments to
improve various algorithmic components that make up a typical still or
cell-phone digital camera image pipeline. This talk provides an overview
of the improved algorithms that have been developed and implemented on
camera processors in the SIP Lab. These algorithms include color filter
array interpolation, auto-white balancing, rule-based auto-focusing,
continuous auto-focusing, low-light auto-focusing, hand-jitter blur
reduction, and over-exposure correction. Results will be shown comparing
the developed algorithms with the standard algorithms deployed in
digital still and cell-phone cameras in terms of accuracy and speed.

Short Bio: Nasser Kehtarnavaz received a
Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Rice University
in 1987, and is currently a professor of electrical engineering at the
University of Texas at Dallas. His research interests include signal and
image processing, real-time image processing, biomedical image analysis
and pattern recognition. He has authored or co-authored five books and
more than 140 journal and conference papers in these areas. He is
currently serving as co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Real-Time
Image Processing published by Springer, and as chair of the Dallas
chapter of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. Kehtarnavaz is a Fellow
of SPIE, a senior member of IEEE and a registered professional engineer.
