Abstract: Fiber gratings are among the widely
employed photonic devices, and they are playing an important role in
various kinds of optical applications such as dispersion compensators,
gain-flattening filters, high-Q notch filters, laser mirrors and
sensors. This seminar deals with fundamental properties of fiber
gratings: fabrication methods, formation of resonant peaks, ultraviolet
and ultrafast laser source, chirping, and grating characterization. The
practical application of fiber gratings, such as a flexible dynamic EDFA
gain-flattening filter, multi-channel dispersion compensation, and
tunable dispersion compensator in optical communications systems will be
presented in detail. This seminar will also introduce the fabrication of
photonic crystal fiber (PCF), PCF gratings, and their applications to
FTTH.

Bio: Lee is head of the Photonics
Research Center and director of the Optical Fiber National Research
Laboratory at the Korean Institute of Science & Technology. His main
research interest is in the area of fiber optics, specifically
development of special optical fiber and fiber-grating devices;
fiber-grating sensor systems for health monitoring of civil structures;
fiber-grating filters, and multiplexer and demultiplexer for optical
communication applications. He is currently working on several projects,
including the development of asymmetric long-period grating filters for
WDM fiber amplifiers, chirped fiber grating for chromatic dispersion
compensators, high-power fiber lasers and photonic crystal fibers.

Faculty Host: Henry Lee, electrical engineering
and computer science
