Abstract: Many previous analyses on the impact of
e-commerce on firms' performance shared two common issues: they were
generally conducted through cross-sectional comparisons of adopters vs.
non-adopters, and firms' performance had been largely assessed through
self-reported perceptual measures. This created some problems in
understanding the true effect of the e-commerce implementation, both in
terms of causality and facilitating factors.

The present analysis is focused on a set of firms that adopted and
implemented e-commerce activity in the last years and, by comparing
objective measures of their performance ante-adoption and at present, it
aims to test three main hypotheses:
*Higher gains are obtained by firms that made stronger investments on
human resources skills during the post-adoption phase;
*Higher gains are obtained by firms that made stronger business and
technology integration during the post-adoption phase;
*Higher gains are obtained by firms that are early adopters.

By controlling for previous performance, firm-specific features and
environmental conditions, the analysis tends to maintain all the three
hypotheses, and it offers some implications for theory and management.
