Corporate Opportunities for Multiplayer Games

 

According to the International Game Developers Association, IGDA, "the market growth in multiplayer games in 2004 totaled 53 million, and is expected to grow to 763 million by 2007." How can the corporate business community take advantage of the opportunities that this explosive market offers?

 

OCTANe at UCI in collaboration with the AeA (American Electronics Association) are hosting "Corporate Opportunities for Multiplayer Games," 

an event focusing on the new creative, technical, and business opportunities provided by the arrival of serious, grown-up game technologies applied to the corporate environment. (See below for Program and Speaker details.)

This event's agenda is comprised of a mix of invited speakers, discussion sessions and demos, to encourage ongoing conversations about new directions in gaming technologies and the benefits of business and management simulations through multi-player games.

 

Panel expertise ranges from stimulating the growth of gaming discovery by increasing public awareness of all ages to the social aspects of business collaboration around the globe.

 

Speakers:

 

André van der Hoek, UCI associate professor, Department of Informatics, the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences and Institute for Software Research. van der Hoek holds a joint bachelor's and master's degree in business-oriented computer science from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and a doctorate in computer science from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

 

Michael O'Brien, engineering specialist, software engineering, The Aerospace Corp. O'Brien has been involved in Internet research since its inception. He was on the technical staff of CSNET, the first Internet service provider. He has been co-administrator for 15 years of DragonMUD, the oldest TinyMUD on the Internet. He has delivered several papers on virtual worlds at the Simulation and Virtual Worlds conferences. At The Aerospace Corp., he administers and is developing groupware on a private Second Life grid, using software from Linden Labs.

 

Joe Adams is president of Discovery Science Center, Orange County's leading destination for hands-on science education. In this role, he oversees the daily management of the center's facilities and staff. He joined the Discovery Science Center after five years with Walt Disney Company in Anaheim, where as program manager in the Resort Program Management Division, he managed an impressive portfolio of new attractions including Tower of Terror and Flik's Fun Fair. He also led a team of 29 engineers, architects, safety experts and others to establish operational requirements, review designs and monitor construction for new attractions. Prior to his tenure with Disney, Joe spent six years at CPS Gas and Electric in San Antonio, Texas. As an operations project engineer, he managed operations and maintenance of gas and coal power plants. He has a master's degree in business administration from UCI and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering/energy concentration from University of Notre Dame. He is also licensed as a Registered Professional Engineer.

 

Eleanor Wynn, Intel Information Technology Group. Wynn has worked at Intel IT Innovation group for eight years. She holds a doctorate in linguistic anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley and is an early leader in ethnography for information systems development. 

She has written many papers and book chapters on conceptual, philosophical and practical issues in discovering new technology needs in work environments. Eleanor spent four years at Xerox, and four years in strategic marketing at BNR (Nortel Labs). Her consulting work totals 18 years on end-user needs/requirements. She has been the editor for Information Technology & People, since 1985. 

Eleanor is active in Intel-based requirements for virtual collaborative environments.
