The Internet plays a very important role not only in our daily life and
office work, but also in real-time industrial manufacturing, scheduling
and management. In the past, a lot of research has tried to develop new
technologies, which make it possible to supervise and control industrial
processes over the Internet. The use of the Internet for real-time
interaction of the remote controlling and monitoring of manufacturing
plants would bring many benefits to industries. This technology cannot
only be used in industry, but also in the field of medicine, education,
and everyday appliances. Although all this looks promising, there are
many new challenges raised by introducing the Internet into control
systems. The design methods of traditional control systems might not be
completely suitable for this new type of control systems. These new
design issues include requirement specification, architecture selection,
user-interface design, Internet latency, networked control system
stability, safety and security. For example, Internet time delay can
lead to irregular data transmission and data loss. In the worst-case,
this can make the whole system unstable. Another example is the problem
of security. When malicious hackers can grant access to a control system
the consequences can be catastrophic.

Dr Shaun Yang was one of the first principal investigators in the UK
funded by British Research Councils to conduct research on
Internet-based control. Dr Yang has produced about 30 academic papers on
this topic. The seminar will review the design issues of ICS and focus
on how to deal with Internet transmission latency and data loss, and how
to assure safety and security.
