"Bio-Functional Supramolecular Interfacial Architectures for Surface =
Engineering and Biosensor Development"

This seminar summarizes the efforts in designing, synthesizing, =
assembling and characterizing bio-active surface coatings based on the =
self-organization of supramolecular systems into the desired =
architectures. The examples given will include the passivation of solid =
surfaces to minimize undesired non-specific binding of proteins by soft =
organic layers based on polymer brushes prepared by the 'grafting-from' =
approach, and by pulsed plasma polymerized coatings.  The final system =
to be discussed is the fabrication of "tethered lipid bilayer membranes" =
to show that this novel system can be built up with structural and =
functional properties comparable to the bimolecular lipid membrane =
(BLM).

About the speaker

Professor Wolfgang Knoll has been with the renowned Max Planck Society =
for over a decade.  He joined MPI as director for polymer research in =
1993.  Dr. Knoll received a Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of =
Konstanz, Germany.  He has done post-doctoral research at the IBM =
Research Lab in San Jose, California and was a visiting scientist at the =
Institute Laue-Lagevin in Grenoble.  He was a Heisenberg fellow and =
recipient of the Heinrich Welker Award.  Knoll is a consulting professor =
at Stanford University's chemical engineering department, where he =
participates in the NSF-funded Center on Polymer Interfaces and =
Macromolecular Assemblies (CPIMA).  Professor Knoll's current research =
includes optical techniques to explain structural and functional =
properties of supramolecular assemblies and nano-materials.
