The Graduate Program in Arts, Computation, and Engineering

presents

Dr. Bill Tomlinson

Speaking on

"Computational (Proto)Ethics"

Time: 200 PM -3:30 PM
Monday, March 31

Location: CS 432

Abstract:
Bill will present his past work in autonomous computer creatures and
other animated characters. Among the projects will be a stop-motion
animation about oppression in a futuristic society and a video clip of
Alan Alda howling like a wolf at Bill's doctoral project. Bill will
also describe the Computational (Proto)Ethics project, the current
direction for his research/art work. The project's goal is to design
ways for real-time computational creatures to understand simple codes of
ethics and engage in ethically appropriate behavior. While this goal is
clearly a long way ahead, Bill is currently exploring the computational
underpinnings that might help make the problem more tenable.

Speaker:
Bill Tomlinson is an autonomous character designer and animator. His
work has shown at venues including SIGGRAPH, Ars Electronica and the
Sundance Film Festival, and has been reviewed by CNN, USA Today, the
BBC, Scientific American Frontiers, Leonardo, the LA Times and the Wall
Street Journal. Bill holds an undergraduate degree in Biology from
Harvard College, an MFA in Experimental Animation from CalArts, and SM
and PhD degrees in Media Arts and Sciences from the MIT Media Lab. He
currently teaches Digital Media at the University of Central Florida.
He is a candidate for the ACE faculty position.
