Cal-(IT)2 presents a seminar

"TOWARDS WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS FOR INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS"

By

Dr. Henry Liu *
Postdoctoral Researcher
Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways
UC Berkeley

Tuesday, March 4, 2003
11:00 AM - Noon
McDonnell-Douglas Engineering Auditorium

ABSTRACT: Advances in hardware and wireless network technologies have
placed us at the doorstep of a new era where small and inexpensive wireless
devices will provide access to information anytime, anywhere as well as
actively participate in creating smart environments. This talk will discuss
various research issues related to the wireless sensor networks, especially
on the development of information management and networking architecture and
algorithms for a system consisting of inexpensive, wirelessly networked
sensors embedded in personal vehicles to provide real-time on-demand traffic
information to drivers. Analytical and simulation models will be discussed
to study the performance and impacts of the wireless sensor networks and how
they complement the existing transportation infrastructure.

SPEAKER: Dr. Henry Liu obtained his Ph.D. degree in Civil and Environmental
Engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 2000. The major
area of specialization for his Ph.D. study was in Transportation Engineering
with a minor in Computer Sciences. His expertise and research interests
focus on transportation network modeling, large-scale traffic simulation,
traffic operations and control, video image processing, artificial
intelligence, and information systems and technologies. He has published
over 20 papers in various journals and conference proceedings.

*Dr. Liu is a candidate for the Cal(IT)2 faculty position in Intelligent
Transportation Systems and Telematics
