Hi All,
Several people indicated in their notes to me that they wished I had had a handout for today's Better Speaker Series presentation on "Beginning Your Speech." Here is a brief summary of the points from the speech:
Successful speeches:
- get the attention of the audience
- introduce the topic
- establish rapport
- take less than five to ten percent of the entire speech time
Opening techniques include:
- State the importance of your topic
- Make a startling statement
- Arouse suspense or curiosity
- Tell a story or anecdote
- Ask a rhetorical question
- Begin with a quotation
- Reference the occasion
- Talk about the Grand Canyon (not in the original outline, but I'm sure that was just an oversight...)
I hope this helps,
Jerry
