Osama hiding in Pakistan
9-11 panelist says getting him would imperil ally
Jim, Mohr, San Bernardino Sun, 21 October 2004
[This was contributed by PN reader Thomas Fortenberry,
an old online acquaintance or mutual friend/mentor of
Net enthusiast Arun Kumar Tripathi, who is now more
into philosophy (phenomenology) than online education.
The suggestion was about an "October Surprise," but
your editor's opinion was that "I remember reading this
and thinking that what's news is just the extent that's
being admitted. I think the reason they can't get to Osama
is that Musharraf won't allow it. He would probably be
overthrown if the most popular man in the Islamic world
were handed over to the hated West. There is some reason
to more afraid of the Islamic bomb than of al Qaeda, but
it's hard to imagine any altruism in Rebublican strategy,
so they must want him this month. Musharraf must have
told the US in no uncertain terms that they are not to
launch any assault on Pakistani territory or else Pakistan
becomes an enemy of the U.S. That being said, I'd be
surprised if there were not an October surprise. They
did try to set up Zarqawi as a substitute for Osama by
putting the same price on his head, and hoped to snatch
him before the election. Why else to turn Falluja into rubble?"
