* Call for book chapters on CALL

User-Centered Computer Aided Language Learning
Submission Deadline: August 10, 2004
A book edited by Dr. Panayiotis Zaphiris, Centre for HCI Design,
City University, London, UK and Giorgos Zacharia, MIT, USA
We will focus on the human-computer interaction elements of learning a
language online. The general goal of the book is to discuss the basis
of a broad framework for the development and management of CALL
environments, enriched with contributions from domains as diverse as
education, information systems, psychology, sociology, linguistics,
artificial intelligence, e-learning and many others. The book will put
the emphasis on the user (learner) and propose methodologies, strategies
and design approaches for designing interfaces that facilitate a
user-centered design approach and focus to CALL.

[Two Web voice technology companies merged soon after I used them
separately in a graduate course at a national university in Japan. They
have also been integrated into learning management systems, so users
should watch whether extra audio or videoconferencing features increase
or become more restrictive with the merger of leading competitors - Ed.]
