* Online conference update

First International Online Conference on Second and Foreign Language
Teaching and Research, September 25-26, 2004.

"The basic aim of this conference is to provide a venue for educators,
established scholars and graduate students to present work on a wide
variety of pedagogical, theoretical and empirical issues as related to the multi-disciplinary field of second and foreign language teaching and research. On these two days, we will gather to share information and capitalize on each others' learnings, experiences and contributions. This conference will also give you an opportunity to make global connections with people in your field. We encourage and welcome your participation in the Conference. All details can be found at the Reading Matrix website."
[The call for presentations was earlier; this is for attendees - Ed.]

[I was deeply involved with online conferences from 1995-2000
and would have gladly participated in this one on L2, but it conflicted
with an invitation to present at the Association of Internet Researchers
conference at the University of Sussex with WAOE colleagues.

Politicos Dig Deep for Your Data
"A prosperous Ohio businessman with a spotty record of turning
out to vote buys a roomy sport utility vehicle from a local dealership.
A few weeks later, a volunteer for a group seeking to re-elect
George W. Bush drops him a line, offering to send literature about
why the president's policies will help lower gas prices."

Slow to react to the Swifties Again, others doing Bushes' dirty work
Maureen Dowd, New York Times / Star Tribune, 24 August 2004
"It's easy for the Bushes to stay gallant. They delegate the gutter.
There are always third-party political assassins, ostensibly independent"
