Greetings from an island in southwestern Japan, which does have
broadband :-)
Regardless of my humble status, the important thing is to help continue
the valuable Papyrus News (PN) service to global educators initiated by
Dr. Mark Warshauer. Let us therefore support one another across
boundaries of geography and culture.
Technology-related annotated links, news or statements that are
educational will be gratefully received. Please include more information
than title and URL for resources if possible so readers can better
decide what will be useful to them. Here are two examples of annotated
resources or opportunities for your reference:
Call for Papers: Academic Exchange Quarterly, Spring 2004
Special Issue: Student Perceptions, Beliefs, or Attitudes
Editor: Panayiotis Zaphiris, Informatics, City University, London
http://www.higher-ed.org/AEQ/ontstu.htm
JALTCALL2003 presentation abstracts
Japan Association for Language Teaching
http://jaltcall.org/conferences/call2003/index.php?content=presentations
A wide variety of timely resources on the topics indicated by Mark below
would be valuable, so please keep PN in mind as you surf the Internet. I
would like to add interactivity by asking for your comments, questions,
or suggestions for topics that PN subscribers might like to know about,
research or discuss.
As an example, I have been thinking that there are ethical dilemmas
common to distance education (DE) and foreign language teaching (FLT).
The two fields indeed are starting to overlap with the technologies
available. Their intersection is likely to be highlighted on this list.
Thus subscribers may have observations as well as resources to submit
for distribution, to: steve_mc@kagawa-jc.ac.jp
Thanks,
Steve

Dear friends and colleagues,
I would like to ask for your support and assistance in continuing
Papyrus News.
I have invited Steve McCarty, a long-time colleague and contributor to
Papyrus News, to take over Papyrus News for an indefinite period, and he
has graciously agreed. Steve is a Professor of English in Japan and the
President of the World Association for Online Education -
http://www.waoe.org/ , and he has many overlapping research interests
with me. He is especially interested in the cultural aspects of
international online communication. Those of you who would like more
information on Steve's background and activities can find it at his
Website: http://www.kagawa-jc.ac.jp/~steve_mc/presence.html
... Please send announcements and links that you think would be of
interest to Papyrus News readers on the following topics:
* technology and education
* technology and literacy
* technology and language learning or language use
* technology and human/social development
* technology and culture
* technology and equity ...
Collegially, Steve McCarty, Professor, Kagawa JC, Japan
