Rob Kling, Professor of Information Systems and Information Science
at Indiana University, died unexpectedly in May 15.
For decades, Rob has been a leader and icon in the field of social
informatics. Rob was a professor of Information & Computer Science
at the University of California, Irvine from 1973-1996, where he
co-founded the Center for Research on Information Technology &
Organizations. He then moved to Indiana University, where he founded
the Center for the Study of Social Informatics. He was also editor
in chief of The Information Society journal.
Rob had a deep concern, personally and professionally, for the
welfare of the public and the relationship of technology use to the
quality of life. His intellectual contributions to the field of
social informatics have been seminal and vast. I personally have
benefited tremendously from his pioneering theoretical work and
research.
A story about Rob, with links to his many projects, as well as
comments from those who knew him well, can be found here:

His family has established a "Rob Kling Social Informatics
Scholarship Fund," information on which can be found at this same URL.
Rob Kling, may you rest in peace.
