From China's Province, A Crafty Germ Spreads
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/04/27/health/27SARS.html?pagewanted=all&position=
Fairly decent journalism on SARS, documenting, among other things,
how SARS started in southern China a full six months ago, and
basically went unreported to the rest of the world for a full 2.5
months. The virus is a great metaphor for the state of the world
today, indicating how in the era of globalization, problems anywhere
in the globe (not only health problems, but also political problems,
e.g., corruption, lack of transparency) can quickly effect the whole
world. SARS is quite scary, since at this point it may be too far
out of control, especially in China, too contain. But, on a positive
note, someone who works on similar viruses here at UC Irvine tells me
that this family of viruses is not that difficulty to tackle, and
both a cure and a vaccine could be developed within a year or so.

The Beilin Abu Mazen document

With the appointment of a new Prime Minister of the Palestinian
Authority, attention is focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
and renewed up of negotiations. The new Prime Minister, Mahmoud
Abbas (aka Abu Mazen), has long been among the group of Palestinians
who have favored a negotiated solution to the conflict. In 1995, Abu
Mazen and Israeli Cabinet member Yosse Beilin jointly proposed a plan
which was never formally adopted by either side, but which ended up
being very similar to what was again put forward and almost agreed
upon in Camp David in 2000. Here's a copy of that 1996 Beilin Abu
Mazen document.

Sociolinguist Jim Gee's thoughtful and provocative book about what
video game makers know about learning (in his view, a lot).

The Future of Freedom

Whether you like him or not, Indian-born Fareed Zakaria, former
editor of Foreign Affairs, could become the first Muslim Secretary of
State in the US. Here's his new book outlining his thoughts about
the relationship between liberty (in his view, underrated) and
democracy (in his view, overvalued).
