This 3-day Summer School includes a number of events which will also be open
to members of the general public.

A Masterclass on the Violin in Greek Popular Music presented by KYRIAKOS
GOUVENTAS of Thessaloniki. Suitable for musicians and non-musicians alike.

>>> Wednesday Evening 22 June:

A talk by Prof. Martin Schwartz of the University of California, on
Relations between Klezmer Music and Greek (and Rebetiko) Music.

>>> Thursday All Day 23 June: Khalili Lecture Theatre

A One-day Conference: "HOMAGE TO MARKOS VAMVAKARIS", to celebrate the
anniversary of the birth of the "father" of Greek Rebetiko music.

Guest speakers:

RENA STAMOU of London and Athens: "Memories of Markos".

MARTIN SCHWARTZ [University of California]: A discussion of Markos's lyrics
and melodies, illustrated with 78s from Prof. Schwartz's archive.

NIKOS POLITIS of Athens: "Musical censorship in Rebetiko: a case involving
Vamvakaris and Tsitsanis".

HARIS SARRIS [University of Athens]: "The 'Aegean Sound' of Markos
Vamvakaris".

GEORGE PANTÁZIS [London]: "Markos in the History of Rebetiko Music"

ED EMERY [Inst. of Rebetology], presenting sections of the new English
translation of the Autobiography of Markos Vamvakaris.

We are hoping that STELIOS VAMVAKARIS, one of the sons of Markos, will
attend the conference, to present his book of Memoirs about his father "The
Holy Mangas" [pub. Kaktos 2004]

A Film Showing and Concert featuring rebetiko singer RENA STAMOU.

As an opener for the concert we shall show a documentary film made by
US-based Turkish director Nefin Dinc. The film is called: "REBETIKO: THE
SONG OF TWO CITIES" [English language, 50mins]

popular music of Greece and Anatolia.
