Please sign-on to our Marine Science / Conservation & Climate Change Letters. The purpose of these letters, addressed to President Obama and the U.S. Senate, is to advance marine conservation as part of the solution to climate change. We ask for: 1) marine science that explores the roles natural ocean ecosystems play in mitigating the effect of climate change, and 2) the option for natural ocean carbon solutions to be considered in climate change legislation and international treaties. Eminent oceanographer and conservationist, Dr. Sylvia Earle, has endorsed this effort as the first scientist to sign-on. Groups signed-on include the International Society for Reef Studies, Coastal Conservation League, EchoEarth International (signed-on by Philippe Cousteau, Jr., the grandson of Jacques-Yves Cousteau), and many others. ? We NEED your signature to make an impact with these letters! ? **The letters are available at: the following link (click on ?Sign-on letters / Scientists?): ? http://sites.google.com/site/blueclimatesolutions/home ? You may be aware that UNEP released its Blue Carbon report earlier this month, which illustrates the carbon capturing potential of coastal marine ecosystems, such as mangrove swamps, seagrass beds, and salt marshes. The report is available at: ? http://www.grida.no/publications/rr/blue-carbon/ ? We define options for natural ocean carbon as the conservation and restoration these coastal and marine ecosystems. This effort represents a fantastic opportunity for advancing marine science and conservation. ? **Please note that the word ?natural? is highlighted in the letters to differentiate this option from potentially harmful geo-engineering. ? Our tentative sign-on deadline is Thursday, Nov 12. Scientists of all nationalities welcome. ? If you would like to sign-on, please respond to this email, with your information in the following format: (1) First name Last name, (2) Qualification or credentials (PhD, MS student...), & (3) Affiliation (University). Please include any notable awards that you may hold. ? I hope you can join us in protecting our planet and conserving our oceans! ? Steven ? Our group had monitored the distribution & abundance of jellyfish species in the coastal waters of Penang National Park, Penang, Malaysia for more then 3 years & now we extended our sampling locations into the coastal waters of Straits of Malacca & South China Sea (East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia) to study the ingression of jellyfish species in thermal power plants near coastal area. I am very interested to participate in the Third International Jellyfish Blooms Symposium in Mar del Plata on July 14-16, 2010 as well as to present part of my research work on jellyfish in our country. I would like to request for the details of this symposium and also the participants form for registration. Thanks & look forward to your reply. Regards, Sim Yee Kwang (M.Sc.) Does anyone know of a species that would typically cause recurring reactions for over two months or is this just an individual's unusual response that is a medical issue? thanks so much Denise Here's the info:' I was on a night dive in Freeport, Grand Bahamas, in September. It was dark and I was busy trying to brush off what felt like bees stinging my exposed arms, legs and face, so I did not see the jellyfish. I know they had long tentacles, because two of them left impressions, one wrapped completely around my upper arm and another on my leg that was 10-12 inches long. The Diver Master said they were small and clear. I wish I had a better description to share.' This was followed by information that she's had recurring allergic reaction (hives, I think) ever since getting stung. They are attracted to dive lights and can be quite common. Fortunately, they are not as dangerous as the Indo-Pacific species, but they pack a nasty sting. While I have not heard of a recurrent reaction, I have observed a lot of variation in how strongly people react to them. It would be easiest to ship them all to a single destination, and my preference would be for them to go to a country where library resources for older books are less well developed than here in Canada. However, if necessary I can send items individually. The books were purchased out of grant funds and have served their purpose so I am happy to send them along free of charge, but would require reimbursement of the shipping costs. Please contact me directly (mackie at uvic.ca) rather than through the newsgroup. George Dr G.O. Mackie, Professor emeritus Biology Department, University of Victoria British Columbia, V8W 3N5 Canada. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
