[Cnidaria] Ectopleura crocea

Peter,

I agree with Allen Collins and Peter Schuchert that they could be
Ectopleura crocea. But they could also be Ectopleura larynx. I
couldn't tell from the photos, but they should be distinguishable by
looking at the female gonophores. Crocea's female gonophores have
eight laterally flattened and kind of keel-shaped ridges that are
distal, instead of the four more reduced processes that are
characteristic of larynx. I would recommend you look carefully at the
female gonophores to help ID since they are often mistakenly
identified in the literature. Another dead give-away to distinguish
the two is that larynx has very distinct perisarc annulations, and is
also typically smaller. Petersen 1990 has a good description.

Best,

Annalise Nawrocki
