Pedro Verduga has done wonderful work on
mucus. You could definitely read up on it by
starting with his papers.

In practical terms, mucus thickens and thins in response to pH
and salt concentration? maybe, I forget.
But I have found that a vinegar plus water rinse
works in removing slime from my hands and gear.
See what you think.

Good luck.

Subject: [Cnidaria] cleaning jellyfish mucus from nets

Dear all,

I am a PhD student studying jellyfish parasites. My sampling net, a hand net with a fine 100 micron mesh, is becoming increasingly blocked by jellyfish mucus. I clean it each time I use it with a high pressure hose but it is not too effective. Does anyone have an alternative cleaning method, such as soaking, or a chemical to remove the jelly mucus?

Thanks for your help
Jo
