[Cnidaria] cnidaria limnocnida tanganicae

Hi Victor,
Can you Jellyfish be grown for extended time in aquaria? Other symbiotic cnidaria (Hydra, Anemones, Coral) can be bleached of their symbionts (which are eukaryotes) using a variety of methods (heat, light, the chemical DCMU). Perhaps you could obtain aposymbiotic jellyfish and compare their growth rates to those of symbiotic ones?
Are all individuals of this jellyfish symbiotic? If not you could compare some naturally symbiotic and aposymbiotic ones.
Hope this helps
Daniel

Dear all,
For several years I have observed individuals of limnocnida tanganicae to be packed with specific species of picocyanobacteria. It colours the jellyfish from pink to greenish-brown.
This species occurs at times massively in the Tanganyika's waters, then hardly no lake sardines are being caught and fishermen complain. The species has no known predators and it may represent a closed end in the food web of the lake.
It would be crucial for carbon flux budgeting whether the combination with picocyanobacteria indeed form a symbiotic relation.
How could this be proven? please could some leads be given.
kind regards,
Victor Langenberg
