[Cnidaria] Corrections to Nando's last statements

Colleagues,
The kernel of Nando's statements are still quite valid. It is the
author's responsibility to consider the journal's policies on pdf file
sharing *before* submission. All major publishers and journals have
dealt with this issue openly, yet there is a great deal of disparity in
policy.
If you feel a policy exists that prevents full dissemination of your
work, look elsewhere. For most journals, free dissemination of a copy
of the paper is legitimate (including pdf copies) if the recipient is
using the copy for academic or scholarly purposes. (FYI...here is
Elsevier's published policy on the subject
http://www.elsevier.com/framework_editors/pdfs/waystousearticles.pdf).
Smart journals and publishers see the trend to all-electronic journals,
and they accommodate pdf file exchange accordingly.
On the other hand, authors should not expect to be given a pdf version
of their paper and then be able to freely share the pdf with others. As
the author, and presumably the one that wishes your work to be cited by
others, it is wiser to assume the cost of pdf yourself (some do it by
paying for OpenAccess) and then be able to distribute the pdf just as
you would a printed reprint or reprint copy. Its a very interesting era
for scientific publication.

Monty Graham
